Summary:
The Echo Tech / Cardiac Sonographer performs a full range of adult echocardiography procedures to assist physicians in diagnosing and evaluating cardiovascular conditions. This includes transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiograms, with occasional pediatric or neonatal imaging. The technologist ensures high-quality imaging, patient safety, and accurate documentation while working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Responsibilities:
Perform complete 2D, M-mode, Color Doppler, and 3D echocardiographic studies following ASE (American Society of Echocardiography) guidelines.
Conduct specialized exams such as Transesophageal Echo (TEE), Bubble Studies, Stress Echo (pharmacologic/treadmill), and contrast-enhanced imaging.
Perform both adult inpatient and outpatient studies , including portable bedside exams in ICU and ED environments.
Evaluate cardiac anatomy and function including LV, RV inflow/outflow tracts, valve assessments, and congenital abnormalities.
Prepare and calibrate echocardiography equipment (Philips systems preferred).
Perform pediatric and neonatal imaging (routine and complex anomaly scans) when needed.
Document all procedures and findings accurately in Epic and PACS systems.
Ensure patient safety, comfort, and understanding throughout diagnostic procedures.
Participate in rotational on-call coverage with other staff - 1 weekday every 2 weeks and 1 weekend (Fri Sun) every 4 6 weeks.
Float between related cardiac imaging units as assigned.
Adhere to hospital policies and regulatory standards for infection control and patient confidentiality.
Key Requirements:
Minimum 2 years of recent hospital-based echocardiography experience.
First-time travelers accepted with strong references.
Epic charting experience preferred.
Must be able to perform TEE, 3D imaging, contrast studies, and stress echo.
Must be comfortable working in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including ED/ICU coverage.
On-Call: Required (rotational schedule).
Weekends: Required (call coverage or Sunday shift per rotation).
Floating: Yes, between like echocardiography units.
Block Scheduling: Yes (required).
Ratios: 1:1.
48-hour workweeks not approved.
Pending license not accepted.
Education:
Graduate of an accredited Cardiac or Diagnostic Medical Sonography program .
Associate or Bachelor's degree in Echocardiography, Cardiovascular Technology, or equivalent field preferred.
Experience:
At least 2 years of full-time experience performing adult echocardiography.
Experience in acute hospital settings with exposure to trauma, ICU, or pediatric populations preferred.
Familiarity with Philips imaging equipment and PACS integration preferred.
License / Certification:
Active Oregon State License required.
BLS (AHA) required.
ARDMS (RDCS Adult) or CCI (RCS) certification required.
Skills:
Adult Echo: 2D, 3D, M-mode, Doppler, TEE, stress echo, contrast imaging, portable studies.
Pediatric/NICU Imaging: Routine and complex anomaly scanning.
Advanced Measurements: RVIT, RVOT, chamber volumes, wall motion, and valvular hemodynamics.
Equipment Proficiency: Philips (preferred), PACS.
Technical Knowledge: ASE protocols, image optimization, cardiac hemodynamics, and quantitative analysis.
Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, communication, adaptability, and teamwork in high-acuity hospital settings.
