Job Summary

The Nurse Extern works under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse,

providing direct patient care while gaining hands-on clinical experience in an acute care setting.

Job Requirements

Education:
Must be a third-year nursing student or higher enrolled in an accredited School of Nursing.

Certifications:
Basic Life Support – Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP) required.

Required Skills:

• Strong critical thinking and sound clinical judgment
• Ability to work independently with appropriate supervision
• Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
• Professional communication and teamwork skills

Essential Functions:

• Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary patient care team.
• Provides direct patient care under the direction, delegation, and supervision of a Registered Nurse.
• Documents patient care accurately and timely.
• Monitors, records, and communicate patient condition to the supervising RN.
• Assists patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
• Supports patient transfers, discharges, referrals, and psychosocial or spiritual needs as appropriate.
• Provides patient and family education based on age, culture, condition, and learning needs.
• Advocates for the physical and emotional well-being of patients.
• Supports departmental performance improvement initiatives.
